Presidential Election Poll

Our latest blog poll (#28) is about the upcoming US presidential election. Voting will continue until August 10, 2008 in the left-hand column of this site. We will do the poll again in October to see if it varies from this one.

This is certainly not a scientific poll because all ages and non-US residents are able to cast votes. It's just interesting and fun to measure the thoughts of Walking With The Giant blog readers.

Previous polls and results can be read on this site by clicking "Blog Poll" in the list of categories in the left-hand column.

First Baptist Of Macclenny Services Bring Back Memories

Pictured left to right: Minister of Music Tim Wilder, Deacon Mike Griffis, Evangelist James Croft, Trustee/SS Teacher Cherill Mobley.

This past Sunday I had the honor of preaching at First Baptist Church of Macclenny (Florida) for the first time. Pastor Edsel Bone and his family had taken a vacation and he entrusted me with his congregation for the day. I had a great time of fellowship, reminiscing about my younger days and sharing the Gospel.

Minister of Music Tim Wilder made me feel right at home as we prepared for the service. The music service and his leading the music certainly made preaching much easier. In fact, everyone on the staff and the members helped to calm my nerves with their friendliness.

I soon learned that Cherill Mobley (a.k.a. Wayne Stetson) would be introducing me during the service. Cherill and I both worked at WBKF 92.1 FM (now WJXR) in Macclenny in the early 1980's. He and I became partners as promoters of the Lawtey Bluegrass Music Convention. The festival was held twice yearly in Lawtey, Florida and was at that time the longest running bluegrass festival in Florida. We ran the show for two years. During that time we became great friends and had a lot of interesting experiences traveling around Florida and Georgia advertising the festival. Cherill related some of those stories during his introduction. It brought back a lot of old memories and some laughs too. We did not have a contract concerning our partnership. We operated on a handshake. You know, the Bible does say to let your yes be yes and your no, no (Mat. 5:37). By the way, Cherill now teaches Sunday School and is a trustee at the church.

During the evening service I was introduced by Mike Griffis a deacon for the church. Mike and I go way back to our days at Baker County High School in Macclenny. We have remained friends throughout the years and he also serves as a District 4 County Commissioner for Baker County.

Years ago I'm sure that Cherill, Mike or myself would have never thought that we would all be serving the Lord in various ministries. It really was a great time ministering with them Sunday.

Before and after each service members of the church stopped by an exhibit about the JOY Box Ministry. I was able to share our 2007 JOY Box video with the congregation during the evening service. There seemed to be a lot of interest in the program. I also want to thank Sonja St. John for her assistance in minding the exhibit and answering questions.

The morning service of FBC Macclenny is carried live on WJXR radio each week. I was employed by the station (then WBKF) when it first came on the air in October of 1978. I had just finished my Associate of Arts degree at Lake City Community College and successfully passed the test given by the Federal Communications Commission for a Radio Telephone Third Class License with Broadcast Endorsement (this test is now no longer required). I was really excited about my first job as a country music DJ. I never would have thought that 30 years later I would again be heard on the station, but this time preaching the Gospel of Jesus Christ. The Lord has certainly blessed me over the years and used all of my jobs and experiences as preparation for this ministry.

You know the "old days" were good, but not nearly as rewarding and blessed as these days as a vocational evangelist!

Preaching Engagement From A Doctor's Visit

Last Friday I had a routine check-up with my cardiologist in Gainesville, Florida. As part of the exam I had an ultrasound of my heart. The technician that performed the test is a member of a church where I have preached in the past, New Oak Grove Baptist in Alachua, Florida. During our discussion she told me her dad is a Director of Missions in one of Florida's Baptist association's. She wanted to give him some literature about my ministry. As I went to retrieve the info from my car she asked if she could have another copy for a co-worker whose husband pastors a Baptist church nearby. Of course I readily supplied them both with a business card, brochure and an audio CD. It's kind of funny that as I left home for the appointment I grabbed a few brochures to have in the car, you know, just in case.

On Monday of this week I received a call from a pastor inquiring about available dates for a revival meeting. He said he would let me know something later. This morning he called again to engage me for the revival meeting. Today I learned the pastor, Keith Stewart, is the husband of the co-worker at the cardiologist's office, Margarette Stewart. We certainly serve an awesome God that has a plan for our life. Just think, He used a routine doctor's visit to open the door for a ministry opportunity in a church that I have never served!

Hmmmm, what if I had not stopped on the way out of the house that morning to grab some literature?

Oh, yes, the revival meeting will be held at Morriston Baptist Church, 20291 SE 33rd Street, Morriston, Florida. The services will begin on Wednesday, September 3, 2008 at 7pm. The meeting will continue through that Saturday at 7pm nightly and on Sunday at 8:30am, 11am and 7pm. For more information call Pastor Keith Stewart at (352) 528-4080.

Please be in prayer for these services and if you're in the area come join us!

Forrest Gump in Heaven

Forrest Gump died and went to heaven. When he got to the Pearly Gates, Saint Peter told him that new rules were in effect due to the advances in education on earth.

In order to gain admittance, a prospective Heavenly Soul must answer three questions:

1. What are two days of the week that begin with "T"?
2. How many seconds are in a year?
3. What is God's first name?

Forrest thought for a few minutes and answered:

1. The two days of the week that begin with "T" are Today and Tomorrow.
2. There are 12 seconds in a year.
3. God has two first names, and they are Andy and Howard.

Saint Peter said, "Ok, I'll buy Today and Tomorrow, even though it's not the answer I expected. Technically, your answer is correct. But how did you get 12 seconds in a year and why do you think God's first name is either Andy or Howard?"Forrest responded, "Well, January 2nd, February 2nd, March 2nd, and so on."

"Ok then, I give," said Saint Peter. "But what about God's first name?"

Forrest said, "Well, from the song...Andy walks with me, Andy talks with me, Andy tells me I am his own...And then from the prayer...Our Father, who art in Heaven, Howard be thy name..."

Saint Peter let him in without another word.

Statler and Waldorf

This brings back some memories. I always loved watching The Muppet Show each week. Here's a video of clips featuring Statler and Waldorf. These two guys were my favorite part of the show. Hmmmm, I think they may have been present during some of my sermons! 8-)

The New Pastor

A new pastor moved into town and went out one Saturday to visit his parishioners. All went well until he came to one house. It was obvious that someone was home, but no one came to the door even after he had knocked several times. Finally, he took out his card, wrote on the back "Revelation 3:20" and stuck it in the door. (Revelation 3:20 reads: "Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If any man hear my voice, and opens the door, I will come in to him, and will dine with him, and he will with me.")

The next day, as he was counting the offering he found his card in the collection plate. Below his message was a notation "Genesis 3:10" ("And he said, I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked.").

4th of July at the Depot

The USDA Forest Service Osceola National Forest will be sponsoring some old-fashion fun at the Olustee Depot on Independence Day. This is a train depot that was utilized in the late 1800's and early 1900's. The depot serves as the Osceola National Forest's interpretive/information center and contains interpretive displays that give you a glimpse of the important roles the railroad and the timber industry played in the development of north Florida.

In fact the activities on the 4th will have an "old-fashion" theme. The day will include games and activities including checkers, a watermelon seed spitting contest, jacks, sack races, horseshoes, hop-scotch and a best home-made pie contest. Olustee's-own Kevin Owen will be on hand to sing a few songs.

The Baker County YMCA will be selling hot dogs, cupcakes, lemonade, and popcorn. All proceeds will be used for youth programs.

I'll be serving as the Master of Ceremonies for the day, so come join us for some fun in my hometown. We kick things off at 11am and end at 2pm.

For more information about the 4th of July at the Depot call (386) 752-0147.

Youth Rally Added To Schedule

I will be preaching during an associational youth rally on Saturday, August 9, 2008 sponsored by Lafayette Baptist Association. The event will begin at 6pm at Lebanon Baptist Church, 6124 280th St. in Branford, Florida. For more information call Pastor Joe Dunn at (386) 854-0027.

Lassa Fever

Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from wrath through Him. —Romans 5:9

When Lily Pinneo, a missionary nurse, was in West Africa, she contracted a deadly disease called Lassa fever. After Lily was flown to New York for medical treatment, her temperature soared to 107°F. To reduce the fever, doctors packed her in ice and fed her intravenously. The fever subsided. After 9 weeks, she had lost 28 pounds and most of her hair. Yet somehow, she survived.

In a laboratory, Dr. Casals carefully isolated and analyzed the Lassa virus. But he too fell ill from his exposure to the disease. At the time, no known treatment was effective. Fortunately, Nurse Pinneo was convalescing and had built up antibodies to the dread disease. She donated blood plasma to Dr. Casals and he recovered too. Her blood saved his life.

All of us are infected with the fatal disease of sin (Rom. 6:23). There is only one cure. It resides in the cleansing power of Jesus Christ’s shed blood. Paul wrote, “Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from wrath through Him” (Rom. 5:9). The righteous wrath of God against transgression has been fully satisfied through Jesus’ death in our place. All we need do is repent, recognize Him as our Savior, and receive the spiritual cure for sin. Have you made that decision?
Dennis Fisher

Redeemed—how I love to proclaim it!
Redeemed by the blood of the Lamb;
Redeemed through His infinite mercy,
His child, and forever, I am. —Crosby

The price of our freedom from sin was paid by Jesus’ blood.

Naming Ceremony For Kingbi's Daughter

Evangelist Raphael Adjei Kingbi and his wife Mavis held a "Naming Ceremony" last week for their second child, a girl, born on June 4, 2008. By tradition, the child was not officially named until the ceremony held on June 18th.

The name given to the little girl is Emmanuella Naa Atswei Anang Kingbi.

Evangelist Ralph gave the following information concerning the meaning of each name.

Emmanuella - God with us
Naa Atswei - First female child
Anang - A 4th born son. Ralph is the 4th born son in his family
Kingbi - Ralph's mother had very fair skin and was called Kingbi, so this has been taken as the family name or the surname

Note: I have given this information as I understood it from Evangelist Ralph during a telephone call earlier today. Please forgive me if any of it is not exactly correct.

You can read about the naming ceremony for their first child in an earlier post on this site.

If you would like to make a financial contribution to the Kingbi's to help with medical, baby and ministry expenses you can do so via credit card, PayPal, check or money order.

I would also encourage you to e-mail a note of congratulations and encouragement to this family as they serve the Lord in their homeland of Ghana, West Africa, you may do so by clicking here.

Evangelist Ralph ministers for the Lord on a full-time basis in the township of Teshie, which is located about 45 minutes from Ghana's capital city of Accra. He also serves as Ghana Ministries Coordinator for James Croft Evangelistic Association and coordinated the crusades and other events during our three mission trips to Ghana, West Africa. He also gives a ministry report each month on the "Walking with the Giant" Podcast. JCEA makes monthly contributions to support his ministry in Ghana.
