GodTube Enters Presidential Race
GodTube.com, the Christian answer to the popular YouTube phenomenon, announced Monday its intention to begin election polling for the 2008 presidential race.
The website, which takes on the motto “Broadcast Him,” was founded last spring and claims to draw over 250,000 registered Christian users and millions of unique visitors every month.
“Our Christian user base is very vocal and active in the election,” commented Chris Wyatt, founder and CEO, in a statement. “We look forward to having the leading candidates participate in this interactive community by engaging our users online with video commentary and live town hall style chats."

ESPN Host Returns to Airwaves after Anti-Jesus Tirade
ESPN host Dana Jacobson went back on the air Monday, beginning her TV show with an on-air apology for her recent anti-Jesus remarks.
"I want to once again say how truly sorry I am for my poor choices and bad judgment that night. I have taken responsibility for what I did say and do and realize why it was wrong," Jacobson said.

The most hard-core forms of postmodern thought are generally limited to academic campuses, but the postmodern worldview is trickling down in various forms to the popular level. While postmodern literary theorists debate the meaning of "totalizing metanarratives," at the level of popular piety we see the widespread substitution of "spirituality" for biblical Christianity.
In this sense, spirituality is a project centered in the self and constantly negotiable - more about "meaning" than truth. Where does Jesus Christ fit in all this? Darrell L. Bock and Daniel B. In 1959, when Lee Kuan Yew assumed the position of Prime Minister of Singapore, his leadership began a long process of national transformation. Initially, disagreements between ethnic groups and a weak economic base made the future of this tiny nation uncertain. By 1990, when Lee stepped down from his position, Singapore had become a model country for ethnic harmony and a thriving economy. After serving as Senior Minister, Lee became Minister Mentor in 2004. Since then he has been an invaluable resource to Singapore’s cabinet and to other leaders around the world.
Insights from the older generation can greatly benefit the younger generation. Although Moses had been used by God to perform miracles and deliver Israel out of bondage in Egypt, he still listened to the advice of his father-in-law Jethro (Ex. 18:24). Jethro had watched his son-in-law care for the concerns of the people and observed: “Both you and these people who are with you will surely wear yourselves out. For this thing is too much for you” (v.18). Moses followed Jethro’s advice to select, train, and delegate others to share the workload (vv.22-24).

Cowboy Church In February
I have another unique preaching opportunity coming on February 12, 2008. I'll be preaching at the Circle J Cowboy Church in Palatka, Florida. It is a unique setting, meeting at the Palatka Horsemen's Club. This is a new church plant by the Florida Baptist Convention. I met this church's "planter", Carl Christiansen, in November of last year at the annual Florida Baptist Convention held in Daytona Beach, Florida. I'm really looking forward to this opportunity and I hope you will join me in prayer about this service and for the new church.

Armed And Extremely Effective

Last January, the police officers in Tijuana, Mexico, had their guns confiscated. It was suspected that some of them had been in collusion with drug traffickers. At first, fearing for their safety, the police stopped patrolling. But eventually, some of them returned to work—carrying slingshots. Three weeks passed before their more effective weapons were returned to them.
Although we all remember a shepherd boy who used a sling and a single smooth stone with great success in his encounter with a giant (1 Sam. 17), few of us would have the courage to face violent threats armed with such puny protection. But every day, although we are often ill-prepared, we do face a threat. As believers, we fight against an enemy we cannot see. Our struggle is not “against flesh and blood, but against . . . spiritual hosts of wickedness” (Eph. 6:12). The outcome of this battle is sure, however. Jesus is the Victor. And using the armor and weapons He supplies, we are able “to stand” (v.13). We fight in His power and strength.
Each day we must put on the armor of God—the breastplate of righteousness, the shield of faith, and the sword of the Spirit, God’s Word (vv.13-17). Preparation and protection are the key to winning spiritual battles.
Though fierce the hatred of our foe
Whose legions seek to work us woe,
He can’t destroy the Living Word
Nor those who own Him as their Lord. —D. De Haan
Spiritual victory comes only to those who are prepared for battle.

Faith factor seen in NFL conduct policy
PHOENIX (BP)--The National Football League has used an unstoppable combination of marketing muscle, longtime loyalties and on-field performance to create the most successful professional sports league in America, if not the world.
Its annual season-ending showcase, Super Bowl XLII, on Sunday, Feb. 3, in Phoenix, has become secular sports' high holy day, drawing interest and global TV ratings on par with the Olympics and soccer's World Cup.
NFL officials, fearful highly publicized illegal and immoral behavior by some of the sport's biggest stars was jeopardizing the league's multi-billion-dollar success, instituted a new Personal Conduct Policy this spring.
The behavior policy, spearheaded by newly hired commissioner Roger Goodell, draws a clear line between right and wrong, and it says players may be punished for behavior that does not result in a legal conviction.

The Most Depressing Day
READ: Exodus 6:1-9
Be of good cheer! It is I; do not be afraid. —Matthew 14:27
Scientists in the UK have calculated that the most depressing day of the year comes in the third week of January. Winter days are dark and cold, holiday excitement has worn off just as Christmas debts are coming due, and New Year’s resolutions have all been broken. The celebrations, gift-giving, and good intentions that once made us feel happy now press us down and leave us feeling hopeless.
Long ago in Egypt, the Hebrew people had high hopes that Moses would rescue them from slavery. But their hopes were dashed when Moses’ good intentions led to worse conditions for them. Instead of gaining freedom, the people were pressed even harder by slave drivers who demanded that they produce the same amount of bricks with fewer resources.
Moses cried out to the Lord, “Since I came to Pharaoh to speak in Your name, he has done evil to this people; neither have You delivered Your people at all” (Ex. 5:23). As Moses and the Hebrew people were about to learn, God’s rescue plans sometimes don’t kick in until all hope seems to be gone.
If the circumstances of your life seem to be going from bad to worse, sending you into depression and despair, remember that God always hears and answers our cries—but it’s in His time, not ours.
Our strength and hope are in the Lord—
We rest secure in His sure Word;
And though we’re tempted to despair,
We know we’re kept within His care. —D. De Haan

Dungy Sees Return to Colts as Chance to Share Faith
Super Bowl Champion Coach Tony Dungy, who announced Monday that he will continue as head coach of the Indianapolis Colts, said his return is a chance to continue his ministry.After the Colts’ loss to the San Diego Chargers in the divisional playoffs last Sunday, Dungy spent a week talking and praying with family members and friends to decide on whether he should return to football or retire.
On Monday, the deeply religious Dungy, who has published a memoir on how his Christian faith has affected him on and off the field, said he felt coaching was the best pulpit for his message.
"I enjoy my job, the players, the staff we have here and Bill (Polian) and Jim," Dungy told reporters. "But it is a platform and that's something I talked to my wife and pastor about. I said 'I could stop and start a ministry, but I might not have a platform like this.'"
"I look at this as a job," he said, "but I also look at it as a ministry ... I might not have as effective a ministry as I have right now."

A children’s story based on the tale of the Three Little Pigs was rejected for an award after judges became concerned that it would offend Muslims.
The animated virtual book for primary school children, The Three Little Cowboy Builders, was also criticised for its potential to offend builders.
The row centred on the Bett awards, which were supported by Becta, the Government’s technology agency for schools. History At The Click Of A Mouse
As you may know, I utilize various web tools to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Video and video sharing sites have become very hot tools on the web. The JCEA produces a video podcast called Walking With The Giant Videos that cover a variety of topics. I've found that one of the great things about video sharing sites is that they allow you to view historical events right on your screen, right when you want them. Now that's cool.
Since today is Martin Luther King Day in the United States, why not take a look at a couple of pieces of history concerning this eloquent and powerful speaker?
Below are videos of his "I Have A Dream" speech and the last speech he gave prior to his assassination.
As Christians, let us also be mindful that all people, no matter their color or origin, need to hear the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Jesus "needed to go through Samaria" and we need to not allow racial barriers to stand in our way of carrying out the Great Commission.

US churches and Christian groups nationwide will remember Dr Martin Luther King Jr on his federal holiday on Monday for changing the nation through unity.
Nearly 40 years after the assassination of the civil rights leader, King’s legacy remains strong and his name still evoked in talks about racial equality. Yet churches will remember the Christian activist not only for his fight against racism in America, but also for his overall message of peace and unity.
“Dr King’s challenge to America – to honour its Constitution that mandates unity, equality and justice for all – is resulting in a healthy, vibrant, progressive America today,” said Zollie L Smith Jr, national director of Assemblies of God US Missions, in a statement. “So let’s not forget the dream by doing our part to keep it.”

Civil rights leader's niece taking on abortion
ATLANTA - The niece of slain civil rights leader Martin Luther King Junior was among participants at a rally at Georgia's capitol Monday in favor of legislation called the Human Life
Amendment.
Alveda King is a pastoral associate with Priests for Life. It's a Catholic pro-life organization dedicated to ending abortion and euthanasia.

ATLANTA, Georgia — Martin Luther King Jr. is used to the puzzled looks he gets from people when they learn his name.
The white, long-haired graphics designer and children's book author goes by "Marty" to maintain his anonymity in the suburbs of Atlanta, where the black civil rights leader who made the moniker famous once lived.
His name is just a coincidence, but it made Marty King pay attention to the civil rights movement while growing up in a small Tennessee town during the 1960s.
Marty King, 53, was named for his father, who was named for the German monk and theologian Martin Luther, founder of the Protestant Reformation in the early 1500s.
It is not the only famous name in his family. Marty King's grandfather was named Abraham Lincoln.

A young Second Lieutenant is working late at the Pentagon one evening. As he clocks out of his office at about 8 P.M. he sees the General standing by the classified document shredder in the hallway, a piece of paper in his hand.
'Do you know how to work this thing?' the General asks. 'My secretary's gone home and I don't know how to run it.'

Our Best Defense

Be my rock of refuge, a fortress of defense to save me. —Psalm 31:2
In late January 1956, during the tense days of the Montgomery Boycott, civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. could not sleep. A threatening phone call had terrified him. So he prayed, “I am here taking a stand for what I believe is right. But Lord, I must confess that I’m weak now, I’m faltering. I’m losing my courage. Now, I am afraid. . . . The people are looking to me for leadership, and if I stand before them without strength and courage, they too will falter. I am at the end of my powers. . . . I can’t face it alone.”
Dr. King later wrote, “At that moment I experienced the presence of the Divine as I never experienced Him before. It seemed as though I could hear the quiet assurance of an inner voice saying, ‘Stand up for righteousness, stand up for truth; and God will be at your side forever.’ Almost at once my fears began to go. My uncertainty disappeared. I was ready to face anything.”
The rest is history. Dr. King wanted to see people of all colors free of the damage done by racism and prejudice.
If we face opposition when we’re trying to do what’s right, we too must cry out to the Lord. He alone is our “rock of refuge, a fortress of defense” (Ps. 31:2). He is our reliable source of strength and protection.
Lord, help me stand upon Your rock of Truth
And never trust myself to sinking sand;
Whenever I am faced with evil powers,
I’ll call upon Your strong and mighty hand. —Hess

Ore. school district rejects class motto as too religious
BLUE RIVER, Ore. - A rural school district has banned a proposed motto for a graduating high school class because it contains a religious reference.Some of the 90 seniors at McKenzie High School had been inspired by a Bible verse quoted at the August funeral of a classmate killed in an all-terrain vehicle accident.
The entire verse was: "They that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength, they shall mount up with wings like eagles."
It was read at the memorial service for Ryan Snapp, who died Aug. 10 after hitting a tree in the alcohol-related crash. The students deleted any references to God in the proposed motto.
But McKenzie School District officials rejected the motto as too religious: "They that believe shall mount up with wings as eagles."

A British factory worker and his wife were excited when, after many years of marriage, they discovered they were going to have their first child. According to author Jill Briscoe, who told this story, the man eagerly told his fellow workers that God had answered his prayers. But they made fun of him for asking God for a child.
When the baby was born, he was diagnosed with Down syndrome. As the father made his way to work for the first time after the birth, he wondered how to face his co-workers. “God, please give me wisdom,” he prayed. Just as he feared, some mocked, “So, God gave you this child!” The new father stood for a long time, silently asking God for help. At last he said, “I’m glad the Lord gave this child to me and not to you.”
As this man accepted his disabled son as God’s gift to him, so David was pleased to show kindness to Jonathan’s son, who was “lame in his feet” (2 Sam. 9:3). Some may have disregarded Mephibosheth because he was lame, or because he was from Saul’s household, but David’s action showed that he valued him greatly.
In God’s eyes, every person is important. He sent His only Son to die for us. May we remember with gratitude how much He values each human life.
Lord, may we see in those we meet
The imprint of Your image fair,
And may their special dignity

The Haircut
A young boy had just gotten his driving permit. He asked his father, who was a minister, if they could discuss the use of the car. His father took him to his study and said to him, "I'll make a deal with you. You bring your grades up, study your Bible a little and get your hair cut and we'll talk about it."After about a month the boy came back and again asked his father if they could discuss use of the car. They again went to the father's study where his father said, "Son, I've been real proud of you. You have brought your grades up, you've studied your Bible diligently, but you didn't get your hair cut!"

Shenandoah

My grandfather grew up on the North American frontier and raised his family on a dairy farm. To pass the time, he often sang songs while he worked. “Shenandoah” was one of his favorites:
O Shenandoah, I long to hear you,
Away, you rolling river,
O Shenandoah, I long to hear you,
Away, I’m bound away,
’Cross the wide Missouri.
That song reflects the love the pioneer songwriter had for the Shenandoah River. Yet he felt compelled to leave its beauty and go west. His love for the familiar rooted him, but the pull of something better won his heart.
When Abraham was called out of Ur to follow God to the Promised Land, he had to leave everything that was familiar to him (Gen. 12:1). Despite the idolatry of that pagan city, Abraham had probably grown attached to the comfort of his home, the variety of the food, and the fellowship of his friends. But Abraham left the familiar to follow God’s leading: “By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go” (Heb. 11:8).
When we experience God’s call to another place, it may mean leaving behind the people and the things we love. But when we’re obedient to God, He will provide something even more fulfilling at our new destination.

When we in faith obey
The leading of our loving God—
He’ll not lead us astray. —Sper

Austrian Court: Chimp Not Legally a Person
NOTE: OK, I'm not "monkeying around" this is a REAL story, so click "comments" below to share your thoughts.VIENNA, Austria — A chimpanzee cannot be declared a person, Austria's Supreme Court has ruled, activists said Tuesday.
An animal rights group had sought to have the chimp, Matthew Hiasl Pan, declared a person in hopes of gaining guardianship of the animal.
The shelter where Matthew has lived for 25 years is going bankrupt, threatening to leave him homeless.
Donors have offered to help support him, but under Austrian law, only a person can receive personal gifts.

Ala. Schools Asked to Ban 'Facing the Giants'

The Americans United for Separation of Church and State sent a letter Tuesday asking the Tuscaloosa City Schools board to bar teachers at Paul W. Bryant High School from showing the movie "Facing the Giants."
The group said that it had received several complaints last fall about students being shown the movie in class.
According to Tuscaloosa City Schools, the film was shown to two classes at the school prior to the semester break.
Tuscaloosa City Schools said Tuesday that the school's principal has "suspended any further showings until the merits of the complaint can be addressed," according to a statement.
In the letter sent to Tuscaloosa City Schools Superintendent Joyce Levey and Bryant High Principal Amanda Cassity, Americans United alleges that "Facing the Giants" is aimed at evangelism and that showing the film in class violates the Establishment Clause.
“This movie is not educational; it’s evangelistic,” said the Rev. Barry W. Lynn, executive director of Americans United, in a statement. “Parents and taxpayers expect our public schools to teach, not preach.”

Is Life a Right?
Is human life sacred? From the very beginning the Bible reveals that it is because human beings are created in God’s image (Genesis 1:27).
The Bible portrays God’s personal involvement in humankind’s creation, and the emphasis throughout is on man’s divinely imparted uniqueness as made in God’s image. That divine image was distorted but not destroyed by man’s fall into sin. God communicated with Adam and Eve both before sin entered the world (Genesis 1:28) and immediately after the Fall (Genesis 3:9), promising His intervention to bring redemption and restoration (Genesis 3:15).
The Bible portrays God’s personal involvement in humankind’s creation, and the emphasis throughout is on man’s divinely imparted uniqueness as made in God’s image. That divine image was distorted but not destroyed by man’s fall into sin. God communicated with Adam and Eve both before sin entered the world (Genesis 1:28) and immediately after the Fall (Genesis 3:9), promising His intervention to bring redemption and restoration (Genesis 3:15).
God tells fallen but regenerate human beings, “Be ye not as the horse, or as the mule, which have no understanding” (Psalm 32:9), but instead look to Him to instruct “and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go” (Psalm 32:8).
The central truth that emerges from these Bible verses is that human life is sacred, thus distinct in nature and design from all other life; and the differences are of kind, not degree. We are not merely the most advanced life in the animal kingdom. The Bible tells us that all life deserves respect, but that human life demands reverence.

America Marks Religious Freedom Day
The United States commemorates on Wednesday the freedom of worship among its citizens, marking Religious Freedom Day.
President Bush issued a proclamation calling "on all Americans to reflect on the great blessing of religious liberty, endeavor to preserve this freedom for future generations, and commemorate this day with appropriate events and activities."
The day celebrates the 1786 landmark passage of the Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom, which acknowledged that the human mind was made by God to be free and men should have the conscience to practice the faith of their choosing.
In addition to the President's proclamation, the Department of Education is sending guidelines to schools, urging administrators to commemorate the day.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — To get people to attend his new church campus, Robbie McLaughlin is sending his message out to where the people are.
Next Friday, staffers from Next Level Church of Matthews will go to bars in the Ballantyne area of Charlotte to hand out shot glasses which ask patrons to "give us a shot" and bear the slogan, "Real church for real people."
The idea is to draw people to the Ballantyne campus, which opens next month.

MAGNA - Two armed men wanted to steal some beer early today, but when they heard Jesus was watching they paid for it.
That from 2News, which says the pair are still in trouble because, technically, they stole the brew.
Police say the incident took place just after 1 a.m., within the time frame state law prohibits beer sales.

LEXINGTON, Ky. (BP)--Listening to Jerry Clower will make you a better sermon-listener. Of course, many of you about now are asking yourself, "Who is Jerry Clower?"
If you grew up and lived in the Deep South in the 1970s through the 1990s you know all about Clower. A comedian, Clower was born and raised in South Mississippi and looked every bit the part -- heavy-set, thick gray hair, huge smile and deep southern drawl. His down-home humor and comedic routines about southern culture were downright hysterical. He was the clean comedian of my parent's generation, and I never heard of an audience he did not have rolling in the aisles with laughter.
But what made him so funny and effective as a comedian was not his material. You or I could have taken his material and received blank stares. What made him so effective was his ability to tell a story.

'Islamic Jesus' hits Iranian movie screens

TEHRAN, Jan 13, 2008 (AFP) - A director who shares the ideas of Iran's hardline president has produced what he says is the first film giving an Islamic view of Jesus Christ, in a bid to show the 'common ground' between Muslims and Christians.
Nader Talebzadeh sees his movie, 'Jesus, the Spirit of God,' as an Islamic answer to Western productions like Mel Gibson's 2004 blockbuster 'The Passion of the Christ,' which he praised as admirable but quite simply 'wrong'.
'Gibson's film is a very good film. I mean that it is a well-crafted movie but the story is wrong -- it was not like that,' he said, referring to two key differences: Islam sees Jesus as a prophet, not the son of God, and does not believe he was crucified.

Christian Puppy
A Baptist couple decide that they want to get a dog. As they are walking down the street in town, they notice that a sign in the pet shop is advertising "Christian Puppies." Their interest piqued, they go inside.
"How do you know they're Christian puppies?"
"Watch," says the owner, as he takes one of the dogs and says, "Fetch the Bible." The dog runs over to the desk, and grabs the Bible in its mouth and returns. Putting the Bible on the floor, the owner says, "Find Psalm 23." The dog flips pages with its paw until he reaches the right page, and then stops. Amazed and delighted, the couple purchase the dog and head home.
That evening, they invite some friends over and show them the dog, having him run through his Psalm 23 routine. Impressed, one of the visitors asks "Does he also know 'regular' commands?"
"Gee, we don't know. We didn't ask," replies the husband.
Turning to the dog, he says, "Sit." The dog sits. He says, "Lie down." The dog lies down. He says "Roll over." The dog rolls over.
He says "Heel." The dog runs over to him, jumps up on the sofa, puts both paws on the owner's forehead and bows his head.
"Oh look!" the wife exclaims. "He's Pentecostal!"

God's Tears

Jesus wept. —John 11:35
In C. S. Lewis’ story The Magician’s Nephew, Digory recalled his terminally ill mother and how his hopes were all dying away. With a lump in his throat and tears in his eyes, he blurted out to Aslan, the great lion who represents Christ, “Please, please—won’t you—can’t you give me something that will cure Mother?”
Then, in his despair, Digory looked up at Aslan’s face. “Great shining tears stood in the Lion’s eyes. They were such big, bright tears compared with Digory’s own that for a moment he felt as if the Lion must really be sorrier about his Mother than he was himself. ‘My son, my son,’ said Aslan. ‘I know. Grief is great. Only you and I in this land know that yet. Let us be good to one another.’”
I think of Jesus’ tears at Lazarus’ grave (John 11:35). I believe He wept for Lazarus as well as for Mary and Martha and their grief. Later, Jesus wept over Jerusalem (Luke 19:41-44). And He knows and shares our grief today. But as He promised, we will see Him again in the place He’s preparing for us (John 14:3). In heaven, our grief will end. “God will wipe away every tear from [our] eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying” (Rev. 21:4).
Until then, know that God weeps with you.
He knows our burdens and our crosses,
Those things that hurt, our trials and losses,
He cares for every soul that cries,
God wipes the tears from weeping eyes. —Brandt

A federal judge has ruled a Missouri school district's policy permitting Bible distribution unconstitutional, but an attorney representing the district has vowed to appeal.
The case against the South Iron School District was filed two years ago by the American Civil Liberties Union on behalf of four sets of parents who are Christian. An appeals court ordered the district last August to temporarily halt the handout of Bibles to fifth graders by Gideons International, known for its widespread distribution of the Holy Book in hotels nationwide.
The school district in Annapolis then altered its open access policy, permitting Gideons and other groups – including the Red Cross, Missouri Water Patrol, and Girl Scouts – to give away Bibles or other literature before or after school or during lunch, but not in classrooms.
But U.S. District Judge Catherine Perry ruled Tuesday that both practices violated the Establishment Clause and granted a permanent injunction against any Bible distributors.

Study: Most Americans Support School Prayers, Religious Displays
A majority of Americans believe religious displays, prayers at school and the Ten Commandments display in a court building should be legal in the United States, a new study showed.
While religious Americans were more likely to agree, a majority of those who are not religious also believe such religious expressions and practices should be allowed, according to Ellison Research which conducted the research on a sample of 1,007 adults. The study was released Thursday.

Survey results revealed that 98 percent of born-again Americans compared to 81 percent of those not born again believe voluntary student-led prayer at public school events, such as football games or graduation ceremonies, should be legal. Also, 97 percent of born agains believe the law should support religious groups renting public property for meetings if non-religious groups are allowed to do so while 86 percent of not born again Americans agree. And 94 percent of born agains say a teacher wearing a religious symbol, such as a Star of David or a cross, during class should be legal compared to 85 percent of not born people.
