On The Winning Side

Few today believe the pagan idea that the world is under the control of warring gods like Artemis, Pan, and Apollo. Yet even sophisticated skeptics readily acknowledge the reality of "forces" over which we have no control. For example, they attribute our inability to prevent violence in various places around the world to what they vaguely call "international forces." And they speak of "economic forces" beyond our control. For example, millions of people are starving despite the fact that there is more than enough food in the world to provide for every person on the earth.
The Bible clearly acknowledges the presence of invisible but very real spiritual beings, or powers. In Ephesians 6:11-12, Paul declared that our primary warfare is against an army of rebellious angels headed by Satan. The bad news is that they are more intelligent and powerful than we are. The good news is that Jesus defeated them by His death on the cross: "Having disarmed principalities and powers, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them" (Col. 2:15).
There are many things beyond our control, but we need not fear. We who have placed our trust in Jesus are on the winning side.

NIGERIA: Islamic Court Endorses Abduction OF Girls
MAIDUGURI, Nigeria, October 9 (Compass Direct News) – It has been more than a year since Allabe Kaku Chibok lost his three daughters because he became a Christian – paradoxically, he lost custody of them only after his ex-wife died.
An Islamic court in this city in the northern state of Borno granted custody to Chibok’s wife’s Muslim relatives after a chain of events that began in November 2004, when he allowed his daughters to attend the funeral service of their mother; she had divorced him when he left Islam.
The girls stayed for a week with Muslim relatives at his former wife’s house, but when Chibok arrived there to take them to school, he found that a retired female police officer, Hajiya Maryam Aliyu, had helped his ex-wife’s Muslim relatives abduct them.

Did you ever wonder why Rahab, the prostitute who lived in the pagan city of Jericho, opened her home to the Israelite spies? And what gave her the courage to name the God of Israel as her own?
This unlikeliest of conversions was prompted by the stories she had heard about the reality and power of God. Though thoroughly steeped in paganism and immorality, her heart was drawn to God. As she told the spies, "We have heard how the Lord dried up the water of the Red Sea for you when you came out of Egypt, and what you did to the two kings of the Amorites" (Josh. 2:10).
Under normal circumstances, the highly fortified city of Jericho would have been virtually unconquerable. Yet it became vulnerable because of the compelling stories of God’s power. Long before God’s people arrived, the self-sufficient pride of this hostile culture dissolved in fear when faced with those who belonged to the God they had heard so much about (v.11). And within the walls, one pagan heart turned to receive the God of Israel and played a strategic role in Israel’s stunning victory.
Let’s boldly tell the stories of God’s greatness. You never know whose heart may be ready to respond!

Moses Negotiates The Commandments

The Hebrew people were sitting around Mt. Sinai. You could hear only a subdued murmur among them, but you could feel the tension in the air.
For hours now, Moses had been on top of the mountain, hidden from their gaze by clouds wafting around its top. Sometimes the clouds became dark and you could hear thunder rolling down. In spite of the warm weather, this caused a shudder among the waiting mass.The end of day was approaching and dusk was beginning to set in when suddenly a figure came through the clouds and walked down the steep mountainside carrying a heavy load. Little Creek Has Big Service
I preached the first service of a revival meeting at Little Creek Baptist Church in Little Creek, Georgia Sunday morning. The church was almost filled to capacity. There was good liberty to preach the Gospel. Pastor Wayne Manning (pictured with me) and the congregation and visitors really made me feel welcome. If you attend one of the services, I'm sure they'll make you feel welcome too! The services continue at 7pm nightly through Wednesday.
The church is located on Little Creek Road in the Little Creek community in Georgia.

Call for Jews to stop calling Jesus a certain name
NOTE: This story contains a word that may be offensive to some. I am posting this article not to be offensive, but to show some of the areas that "religious leaders"are concerning themselve with instead of seeking the lost. Maybe we should re-read Mat. 28:19.
A senior American cardinal has asked Jews to reconsider descriptions of Jesus as a "bastard" in exchange for a softening of traditional Catholic prayers calling for Jews to be converted to Christianity.

School's ban on 'Ave Maria' instrumental to be appealed
EVERETT, Wash. - A former Washington state high school student wants a higher court to decide whether school officials had a right to ban an instrumental version of "Ave Maria."
A federal judge in Seattle recently ruled that the Everett School District was on solid ground when it banned the song from the Jackson High School commencement because it was religious.

U.S. Appeals Court to Decide Whether Coach Can Kneel While Student Athletes Pray
A federal appeals court recently heard arguments over a lower court’s ruling that allows a New Jersey high school football coach to kneel or bow his head during student-led team prayers before games.
A lower court had sided last July with East Brunswick School District’s football coach, Marcus Borden, ruling that “taking a knee” is not praying.
In his lawsuit, Borden claimed that that the district violated his free-speech rights when it ordered him to stop kneeling and bowing his head — acts he considered secular signs of respect — during pre-game prayers led by student players.

Crushing Responsibilities
READ: Nehemiah 4:1-14
Do not be afraid of them. Remember the Lord, great and awesome. —Nehemiah 4:14
While the outcome of the Second World War was still uncertain, Franklin Roosevelt died and Harry Truman was sworn in as the next president of the United States. The following day, President Truman told reporters, "When they told me yesterday what had happened, I felt like the moon, the stars, and all the planets had fallen on me." Certainly Truman faced crushing responsibilities.
Nehemiah was a great leader who also faced overwhelming burdens. Accompanied by Jewish exiles who had returned from Babylon, Nehemiah was given the task of rebuilding the walls of Jerusalem. Amid terrible opposition, he refused to be intimidated by the jeers and threats of the enemy. Instead, the man of God organized a dual strategy of construction and military defense—bathing their efforts in prayer: "We made our prayer to our God, and because of them we set a watch against them day and night" (Neh. 4:9). Nehemiah addressed the ongoing threats the workers faced by getting their focus back on God: "Do not be afraid of them. Remember the Lord, great and awesome" (v.14).
Are you facing crushing responsibilities today? Praying for God’s help and putting together a practical plan can give you strength to complete the task.

Angel's Mistake
A middle aged woman has a heart attack and is taken to the hospital. While on the operating table she has a near-death experience. During that experience she sees her guardian angel and asks if this is her time. The angel says no and explains that she has another 30-40 years to live.Upon her recovery she decides to just stay in the hospital for a few more days and have a facelift, liposuction and a tummy tuck. She even has someone come in and change her hair color. She figures since she's got another 30 or 40 years she might as well make the most of it. She walks out the hospital after the last operation and is killed by an ambulance speeding up to the hospital.
She arrives in heaven again, sees her guardian angel and says, "I thought you said I had another 30-40 years!!"
The angel replies, "Sorry. I didn't recognize you."
No Excuses
READ: Romans 10:1-13
Whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved. —Romans 10:13
People have many different reasons for rejecting the gospel. A common one is to blame Christians for something they did or did not do. These critics say, "I know a Christian who treated me poorly." Or, "I went to church, and no one talked to me."
Indeed, Christians aren’t perfect, and many can be bad examples. But blaming others doesn’t remove one’s accountability to God.
The truth of the gospel does not depend on the way others live out their faith. Salvation is about Jesus alone. Romans 10:9 says, "If you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved."
Some people may use Christians as an excuse to reject the gospel. But they certainly can’t point a finger of blame at Jesus. He is sinless and perfect in every way. Pilate said of Him, "I have found no fault in this Man" (Luke 23:14). And Jesus did what no one else could do—He suffered death on a cross to provide salvation for all who believe in Him. That makes it tough for someone to say, "I’m not going to become a Christian because I don’t like what Jesus did."
Don’t get sidetracked by looking at the faults of others. Look to Jesus. He alone is the way to heaven.
There is no excuse for saying "No" to Christ.
He is the Way, the Truth, the Life—
That One whose name is Jesus;
There is no other name on earth

Survey: More Americans Familiar with Big Mac Ingredients than 10 Commandments
Think most Americans know the Ten Commandments?
Think again.
Despite living in a country with a rich and still prevalent Christian heritage – as evident from the Pledge of Allegiance to the nation’s motto, “In God We Trust” – Americans were found to be more familiar with the ingredients of the McDonald’s Big Mac hamburger than some of the Ten Commandments.
In a new study conducted by Kelton research in conjunction with the upcoming release of the animated feature film, The Ten Commandments, 80 percent of respondents knew "two all beef patties" were among the ingredients of the Big Mac but only six out of ten could identify "Thou shalt not kill” as one of the Ten Commandments. Also, while 43 percent of respondents – including those who regularly attend worship – could recall Bobby and Peter, two of the least-recalled names from the Brady Bunch, they were less familiar with two of the least recalled commandments – "Remember the Sabbath" (34 percent) and "Do not make any false idols" (29 percent).

Changing History

Today when we can make international cell-phone calls, send worldwide e-mail, and download images from space on our computers, it’s difficult to imagine the impact of one small satellite the size of a basketball. But on October 4, 1957, the Soviet Union’s launching of Sputnik I, the world’s first artificial satellite, ushered in the modern Space Age and changed the course of history. Nations rushed to catch up, technological development accelerated, and fear alternated with hope about the meaning of it all for humanity.
But events that alter the present and the future sometimes occur in obscurity. That was true of the birth of Jesus—just one baby, born to an ordinary couple in a small town. But it changed the course of history. The words of an angel spoken to shepherds began to spread: "There is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord" (Luke 2:11). Nineteen centuries later, Phillips Brooks wrote of Bethlehem, "The hopes and fears of all the years are met in thee tonight."
When we open our lives to Christ the Lord and acknowledge Him as our Savior, the course of our future history is changed for time and eternity. These "good tidings of great joy" (v.10) are for everyone, everywhere.
The turning point in history
Occurred one night in Bethlehem;
And shepherds spread the glorious news
The angel had announced to them. —Hess

Sometimes, You CAN Go Home
The Bible quotes Jesus in Mark 6:4 (NKJV) this way:
But Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his own country, among his own relatives, and in his own house.”
I had the honor of preaching a revival meeting in the small community where I live this week. The services were held at First Baptist Church of Olustee, Florida. This is the church I "grew-up" in and that licensed me to the Gospel Ministry.
Each service presented new opportunities to share the Gospel with family, friends and some folks I was meeting for the first time. We had some great music provided by the church's music leaders, Kevin Owen and Cheryl Kent, and they treated us to several specials. We also had the Minister of Music from First Baptist Church of Lake Butler, Stephen Wells and his wife Christy leading the music and singing specials on Monday night. On Tuesday night, one of my brothers, Eddie Croft sang a couple of songs for us. The music was really great. You can see and hear one of Kevin and Cheryl's songs on our YouTube Channel.

During the five services the Lord made His presence known with many people coming to the altar for prayer. We also had one person to rededicate their life to Christ. The greatest miracle came on Wednesday night as a lady gave her life to the Lord and was saved!!!
I understand that this lady had started attending, at the request of a friend, a weekly morning ladies Bible study led by one of the women of the church. This led to her and her family attending a few worship services and then the revival meeting. This is a wonderful illustration of how important it is to reach out to others. It also shows us that no ministry is a small ministry, God can and will use us if we just let Him. One more thing, revival fires could have been sparked by that one invitation.
Ministering to friends and family; ministering with friends and family; and seeing the miracle of salvation! Yes, it was a great week serving the Lord in my hometown, Olustee, Florida.
Sometimes, a preacher CAN go home, with the Lord's help. 8-)

Large posters depicting Jesus Christ washing the feet of world leaders and terrorist Osama bin Laden have generated numerous complaints at the Oregon malls where the banners briefly hung.
The complaints, however, prompted advertising executives who initially approved the posters to remove them.

Dozens of parents said at an Oak Lawn school board meeting Tuesday night that while they're happy to have a student body of varying religions, they want to keep celebrating what they say are traditional American holidays and customs.
That doesn't mean they aren't open to observing other religions' holidays, the parents told the Ridgeland School District 122 board, which is looking at its policies concerning religious teachings and observances. At issue is whether Christian holidays, such as Christmas, should be celebrated now that Muslim children make up about 30 percent of district pupils.
The debate, which has raged in the community for weeks, was sparked by a parent, Elizabeth Zahdan, who asked that stars and moons be displayed in schools in honor of Ramadan. She was denied and told that schools couldn't partake in religious celebrations.

‘In God We Trust’ Marks 50th Anniversary Amid Controversy
fter 50 years of appearing on the back of U.S. dollar bills, the words “In God We Trust” continue to be at the center of debate with some courts examining whether references to God in the public sphere violates the Constitution’s separation of church and state.
In Indiana, the American Civil Liberties Union is waging a legal battle over the state’s “In God We Trust” license plates, which now appear on over one third of all passenger cars statewide since its introduction at the beginning of this year, according to the state’s Bureau of Motor Vehicles.
One highly spotlighted case in 2006 involved atheist Michael Newdow, who asked the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals to declare “In God We Trust” a violation of the First Amendment, which prohibits the establishment of a state religion. Newdow has also unsuccessfully fought to have courts strip “under God” from the Pledge of Allegiance.
While some court cases don’t directly attack the four-word phrase, also the nation’s current motto, they have challenged other evocations of God that appear throughout America’s legal and education systems – from the reciting of “under God” in the Pledge of Allegiance to posting the Ten Commandments in courthouses.

Is Jesus Exclusive?

Jesus said . . . , “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” —John 14:6
I once saw Billy Graham’s daughter Anne Graham Lotz on a popular news talk program. The interviewer asked, “Are you one of those who believe that Jesus is exclusively the only way to heaven?” He added, “You know how mad that makes people these days!” Without blinking she replied, “Jesus is not exclusive. He died so that anyone could come to Him for salvation.”
What a great response! Christianity is not an exclusive club limited to an elite few who fit the perfect profile. Everyone is welcome regardless of color, class, or clout.
In spite of this wonderful reality, Christ’s claim in John 14:6 to be the only way to God continues to offend. Yet Jesus is the only way—the only option that works. All of us are guilty before God. We are sinners and cannot help ourselves. Our sin had to be dealt with. Jesus, as God in the flesh, died to pay the penalty for our sins and then rose from the dead. No other religious leader offers what Jesus provides in His victory over sin and death.

Eritrean Christians describe anti-faith torture methods
For Paulus, an Eritrean refugee in northern Ethiopia, a helicopter is not only an aircraft people can spot in the sky above. It is also a form of torture which forces victims to balance on their belly with hands and feet tied together and legs bent behind their back.
The evangelical Christian said he knows “the helicopter” well because, he claims, he was tied in that position for 136 hours in an effort to pressure him to recant his faith.
“They kept asking me to sign a document,” he told BBC News in a report last week, “and agree to not participate in church activities or express my faith in any form. I was told I would be untied and released the minute I agreed to their requests.”

Nine Christians killed following accusations of blasphemy in Nigeria
Over the weekend at least nine Christians were killed, churches were set on fire and businesses and homes destroyed in the Tundun Wada area of Kano State, Nigeria, Christian Today has learned.
The violence was committed by Muslim youths and followed unspecified allegations that Christians had blasphemed the prophet Mohammed.
According to sources on the ground, not a single Christian church, house or business has been left undamaged and an unknown number of people were injured and displaced during the violence, Christian Solidarity Worldwide (CSW) reported.

Presidential Hopefuls Offer Views on Gay Princes Story for Children
Republican presidential hopefuls responded Thursday to comments made by their Democratic counterparts with their take on a homosexual-themed story that was read to children at school.
The book, King & King, is about a prince who searches for a princess bride but ends up marrying another prince instead. Two sets of parents had filed a lawsuit against Joseph Estabrook Elementary School in Lexington, Mass., and the school district after a teacher read the book to a 2nd grade class. The parents claimed that the book amounted to teaching sex ed without parental consent.
The question raised during Wednesday’s Democratic debate in New Hampshire was: "Would you be comfortable having this story read to your children as part of their school curriculum?"

St. Johns coach under fire for team prayers
A group threatens to sue if the Bartram Trail coach doesn't separate his religious beliefs from his work.
He prays the young men will make wise decisions over the weekend, then he says "amen" and sends them on their way.
His prayer isn't particularly different from those said at St. Augustine High, Nease and Pedro Menendez games. But unlike his counterparts in St. Johns County, Sutherland has been facing criticism in recent weeks from a group threatening to sue if he doesn't separate his religious beliefs from his work. The other schools have not been threatened.
Sutherland apparently is being targeted because the mother of a student who couldn't make the team and other community members have singled him out in complaints to the Florida chapter of American Atheists.

Veteran White House correspondent releases new book on Bush's faith
That revelation, among others, has been revealed in a recently published book about the president's faith. The book is titled The Evangelical President: George Bush's Struggle to Spread Democracy throughout the World. In writing the book, Bill Sammon was able to conduct many exclusive interviews with the president and concludes that Mr. Bush is unapologetic about his evangelical Christianity. However, the New York Times best-selling author says the president does not really like that term.
