Ghana Bible Distribution Update and Bawku Revival

Evangelist Raphael (Ralph) Adjei Kingbi will be traveling into the Upper East Region of Ghana to lead revival services next week.  The meeting will be held at Ebenezer Presbyterian Church in Bawku Municipality August 15-20, 2010.  Evangelist Ralph pastors a church in the Northern Region of the West Africa country and serves as the Ghana Ministry Coordinator for James Croft Evangelistic Association.  The JCEA led several outdoor evangelistic events in Teshie, Accra in 2002-2004.

The Bawku Municipality, which is the second largest commercial city in the Upper East Region, has since 2007, been in turmoil, as a result of a communal violence between the Kusasis and the Mamprusis.  Evangelist Ralph reports the entire district in under a 10pm curfew and the conflict has affected church life.

"This revival will hopefully, by the Grace of God, bring back the love for worship," said Evangelist Ralph.

Please be in prayer for Ralph's travel, safety, and for the Lord to anoint him to preach the Gospel with His power and authority.

Ralph also reports the distribution of Bibles provided by a partnership between JCEA and First Baptist Church of Lake Butler, Florida is continuing.

"I have two boxes left (out of ten), one English and one local languages. I wish I have a camera to send you pictures of the distributions," he said.

Please pray the Lord will bless every copy of His Word that is distributed and each recipient.

Tebow: Football, NFL not source of true success

CUMMING, Ga. (BP)--With dozens of kids toting Florida Gator signable footballs or miniature orange football helmets, or decked out in blue jerseys with "15" on the back -- and grown-ups wearing their game-day Gator shirts -- it could have been October in Gainesville, Fla.

Instead, the site was First Redeemer Church, a sprawling, 4,000-member SBC church in Cumming, Ga., right in the middle of Georgia Bulldog and Georgia Tech country. The draw was Tim Tebow.

The 6-foot-3, 250-pound former University of Florida Gator, Heisman Trophy winner and new Denver Bronco quarterback spoke to 4,800 in two packed worship services and at a breakfast on Sunday, July 4 as part of the church's annual "God and Country Day."

JCEA Directors On Mission

Two members of the James Croft Evangelistic Association Board of Directors leave this weekend on foreign mission trips and one returns from a two week trip.

Greg Lyons (left) of Lyons & Lyons C.P.A. in Macclenny, Florida returns from Honduras this weekend after a two week stay.  He volunteers with team members from International Mission Builders of Macclenny on church construction and evangelistic activities.  Greg makes regular trips to Honduras and Haiti.

A new IMB team will leave for Honduras on Saturday including Terry Elixson (right), pastor of New Oak Grove Baptist Church in Alachua, Florida.  This group will conduct a Vacation Bible School in a church they helped construct in May of this year.  The team will also minister in an orphanage and some of the public schools in the country.  Other team members on this trip include volunteers from Sardis Baptist Church of Worthington Springs, FL., First Baptist Church of Lake Butler, FL., and Bethel United Methodist Church of Lake City, FL.

Brian Mimbs (left), pastor of Chapel Hill Baptist Church in Tallahassee, Florida will be on mission with Orphans Heart, the international ministry arm of Florida Baptist Children's Homes in Guatemala.  Chapel Hill Baptist Church is in a 3-year partnership to rehabilitate a nearly-defunct malnutrition center for children northeast of Guatemala City.  In the past 18 months, the center has been able to increase its capacity from 6 children to nearly 50.  The team from Chapel Hill Baptist departs today for a week of mission work.

After being diagnosed with terminal cancer, 47-year-old Randy Pausch returned to Carnegie Mellon University to deliver a final lecture to colleagues, students, and friends. The professor of computer science thought that perhaps 150 people might show up. Instead the 400-seat auditorium was packed. For an hour, Randy opened his heart to them in a humorous, insightful, and moving farewell that was focused more on living than dying. Within weeks, the videotaped lecture had been seen by millions on the Internet and later became the seed of a bestselling book. Those facing death often have an unusually clear perspective on what is truly important in life.

The apostle Paul’s last farewell has inspired countless followers of Christ through the centuries. “The time of my departure is at hand,” wrote Paul. “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith” (2 Tim. 4:6-7). Paul’s instruction to Timothy spans the ages to challenge us as well. The letter begins and ends with God’s grace (1:2; 4:22) and in between is a celebration of the unceasing faithfulness of God.

A message from the dying can give purpose to the living. Paul’s triumphant finale, “To Him be glory forever and ever” (4:18), is a message we can all live by.

Are we striving for the world’s praise

Research reveals value of event evangelism

FORT WORTH, Texas (BP)--Block parties, festivals and other evangelistic events are essential ingredients for effective churches, according a study by the Scarborough Center for Baptist Church Planting at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in conjunction with the North American Mission Board.

"Our findings suggest that many of our nation's most effective evangelistic churches are utilizing attractional evangelistic events," said Jerry Pipes, team leader for mass evangelism at NAMB.

WHAT THE STUDY REVEALED

Several common denominators emerged among highly effective churches:

-- They sponsor more holiday-related, revival-like and sports and recreation evangelistic events than any other types (in that order). More than half sponsor revival-like evangelistic events.

"We define evangelistic events as special events, which intentionally draw lost people through relationships and attraction, clearly present the Gospel and provide an invitation to respond," Pipes said.

In 1776, the 13 British colonies in North America protested the limitations placed on them by the king of England and engaged in a struggle that gave birth to a brand-new republic. The infant nation soon adopted that now-famous document known as the Declaration of Independence.

Almost 2,000 years ago, the Lord Jesus cried out on the cross, “It is finished,” proclaiming the believer’s “declaration of independence.” All of humanity was under the tyranny of sin and death. But Christ, the sinless One, took our place on Calvary and died for our sins. Having satisfied God’s righteous demands, He now sets free for eternity all who trust in Him.

Paul wrote, “Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us” (Gal. 3:13). Romans 8 assures us, “There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus . . . . For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death” (vv.1-2). Galatians 5:1 urges all who have been redeemed to “stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free.”

We are thankful to God for any freedom we enjoy in a nation. But above all, believers everywhere can praise Him for the freedom that is found in Christ!

Jesus provides a perfect salvation;
“Come unto Me,” O hear His sweet call!
Come—and He saves us once for all. —Bliss

Our greatest freedom is freedom from sin.

Ghana's Black Stars shine at World Cup

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa (BP)--A team that prays together plays well together, or so it seems for Ghana's national soccer team, the Black Stars, who have advanced to the World Cup quarterfinals.

Of six African nations that qualified for the World Cup, Ghana is the only one still in the tournament. The Black Stars get their name from the country's flag, which features a black star in its center amid three horizontal stripes -- red, yellow and green.

"What I've noticed, more than anything, about the Black Stars is they are a team in every sense of the word," writer Jeff Bradley noted in an article for ESPN The Magazine.

"From their pregame -- and postgame, and halftime, and pre-training and post-training -- songs and prayers, to their disciplined adherence to [coach] Rajevac's rigid system that features a single striker, they are true believers that the whole can be greater than the sum of its individual pieces," Bradley wrote.

Our Daily Bread

We exhorted, and comforted, and charged every one of you, as a father does his own children. —1 Thess. 2:11

In the US, more long distance calls are made on Mother’s Day than any other day. But on Father’s Day, the most collect calls are made. It seems that children still depend on their fathers to provide, even when they are far away from home.

Fathers are needed and wanted for much more than financial help. While 1 Thessalonians 2:10-12 is primarily directed toward church leaders, Paul talks about how their role is similar to a father’s. He states: “You know how we exhorted, and comforted, and charged every one of you, as a father does his own children.”

Exhorted is “to call near.” It is easy for fathers to think that all that’s required of them is to bring home a paycheck. But children need their close encouragement.

The word comforted is “to console.” Nothing is more valuable to a child than the time given by a father to listen and talk. Without constant relating, relationships turn cold.

Charged is “to affirm.” Fathers challenge their children by affirming the truth of God’s Word as they live it out in front of them. And even in failings, they affirm what is right through the asking of forgiveness.

How thankful we can be for fathers who help their children “walk worthy of God” (v.12).

Children's Camp Begins Monday

I will be speaking each day during an annual children's camp sponsored by several churches in North and Central Florida beginning Monday, June 21, 2010 through Thursday, June 24th.  "Camp Sonrise" will be held at Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Campground near Madison, Florida . I will be leading devotions in the morning and preaching each night for the campers and counselors.  This will be my second year ministering at the camp and I'm excited for the opportunity.

Youth Service Last Night

I had a last-minute call to preach a youth service last night at Forest Grove Baptist Church near Alachua, Florida.  The youth were involved in a week of public ministry projects called "Project Give".  The ministries included building a wheelchair ramp at a home and conducting a Vacation Bible School in a low-income neighborhood.  It was great listening to the testimonies of the participants.  I challenged them from Matthew 28:16-20 to individually continue doing their part in carrying out the Great Commission after the week of projects have ended.

My friend, and Forest Grove Youth Minister, Mark Spradley has a heart for missions and leads the youth to opportunities for service.  He is leading a group to Alaska next week for World Changers.  Please pray for their travel, health and service.

Attending Southern Baptist Convention

I'll be attending an annual meeting of the Southern Baptist Convention for the first time this week.  I'll also be attending the Pastor's Conference prior to the meeting.  I'm excited about hearing some great preaching and serving as a messenger for my home church, First Baptist of Lake Butler, Florida.  Many important decisions will be made during the convention including the election of officers and a vote on the Great Commission Resurgence Task Force recommendations.  I also hope to share information about my ministry with pastors from across the United States should the Lord open doors of opportunity.

Please pray for our travel, the business that will be conducted, and open doors for ministry opportunities.

Tallahassee VBS Underway

Cowboys and cowgirls from Tallahassee moseyed on over to Meggs' Barn yesterday for the kick-off of Saddle Ridge Ranch Vacation Bible School.  The event, with a western theme, is held on the farm of Chapel Hill Baptist Church Deacon Willie Meggs (pictured with Evangelist James Croft), who is also the Leon County States Attorney.  The horse barn is the perfect setting for the cowpokes to make western crafts, eat some good vittles, play some rip-roaring games and learn new songs  All this week we'll be roundin' up questions and drivin' home answers as we study God's word with Evangelist James Croft.  The Bible school continues daily through Friday from 10am-noon for young'uns pre-k to 5th grade.  Meggs' Barn is located off Riverton Road in Tallahassee, Florida.  For more information or directions call Chapel Hill Baptist Church (850) 222-6900.

Outstanding Volunteer Service

I was honored to receive a Certificate of Appreciation last week for Outstanding Volunteer Service from J. Franklyn Keller Intermediate School in Macclenny, Florida.  I read to several classes during Literacy Week, produced a video on "bullying", and coordinated a visit from a real Leprechaun on St. Patrick's Day.

Galloping Into Tallahassee

I'll be moseying into Tallahassee, Florida next week to teach during a Vacation Bible School sponsored by Chapel Hill Baptist Church. The event will be held Monday-Friday, June 7-11, 2010 from 10am to 12pm at Meggs' Farm off Riverwood Road.  The name for the 2010 VBS is Saddle Ridge Ranch and, as you might have guessed, it's based on a western theme.  Young'uns Pre-K to 5th grade will enjoy rip-roaring games, good vittles, making bodacious crafts, and listening to Bible stories out on the range.  For more information or directions call (850) 222-6900.
