Historian Barton says Hindu prayer before Senate raises concerns

On Thursday, a Hindu chaplain from Reno, Nevada, by the name of Rajan Zed is scheduled to deliver the opening prayer in the U.S. Senate. Zed tells the Las Vegas Sun that in his prayer he will likely include references to ancient Hindu scriptures, including Rig Veda, Upanishards, and Bhagavard-Gita. Historians believe it will be the first Hindu prayer ever read at the Senate since it was formed in 1789.

Miracle Or Magic?

Though you do not believe Me, believe the works, that you may know and believe that the Father is in Me, and I in Him. —John 10:38

Did Jesus really walk on water or simply use some nearby sandbars? Did He actually multiply bread and fish to feed 5,000 or just hypnotize the crowd into thinking He did? Was it miracle or magic?

When Christian illusionist Brock Gill explored those questions for a BBC television program, he set aside his personal beliefs to examine the biblical miracles with an open mind. Producer Jean-Claude Bragard said, “Even if an atheist had been chosen as host, the conclusions wouldn’t have changed.” In every case, Gill concluded that Jesus could not have tricked people into believing they had witnessed a miracle.

But many who actually saw Jesus’ miracles refused to believe that He was the Messiah. They were ready to execute Him for claiming to be God (John 10:30-31). Jesus told them, “If I do not do the works of My Father, do not believe Me; but if I do, though you do not believe Me, believe the [miracles], that you may know and believe that the Father is in Me, and I in Him” (vv.37-38).

The miracles of Jesus identified Him as the Son of God, the Savior who had come to give His life for the sins of the world. His works and resurrection were not magic tricks, but miracles of love and grace. —David C. McCasland

Graham Attracts 200,000 for Ukraine's Largest Evangelical Event

The first-ever Franklin Graham Festival to hit Ukraine became the largest evangelical event in the history of the former communist-ruled country, attracting over 231,000 people last weekend to hear the Gospel.

Over three days, the Graham fest drew 124,586 to the Olympic Stadium in the country’s capital Kiev, and another 107,000 people via live satellite broadcast in 104 additional venues across Ukraine.

On the festival’s second night, more than 40,000 people stood in the rain and 6,694 people responded to the invitation to follow Jesus Christ by the end of the weekend, according to the festival’s report.

It was Palm Sunday, and the family's 6-year old son had to stay home from church because of strep throat. When the rest of the family returned home carrying palm branches, the little boy asked what they were for. His mother explained, "People held them over Jesus' head as he walked by."

"Wouldn't you know it," the boy fumed. "The one Sunday I don't go to church, and Jesus shows up!"

Church Uses Jesus-Centered Karate to Teach Christian Values

A church is using a Karate Club rather than a Bible Club to teach Christians to imitate the life of Jesus and walk in His footsteps.

Values best exemplified by Jesus Christ such as respect, self-control, responsibility, community service, self-confidence, perseverance, and love is now being translated into Karate kicks and blocks at Judah’s Lions, a ministry of the Michigan-based Hidden Springs Church.

“Jesus is really the embodiment of love, power, compassion and righteousness,” instructor Chuck Russell said, according to The Associated Press. “What better item or focus to have a karate club centered around than the Lord [who] embodies the same traits the martial arts focuses on?”

David, I missed you in class today,” I told one of my college students when we ran into each other in the Information Services office. He gave me that stunned “freshman in the first week of college” look, and then it struck him—he had misread his schedule and had gone to the wrong class.

The funny thing was, there were two grammar labs—mine, and another professor’s—and he had attended the wrong one. I told him, “That’s okay. You were getting the right information, so I won’t count you absent.”

As I thought about it, I concluded that this is a little like the options many Christians have regarding the churches they attend. The key factor is to attend a church where the right information is shared—where salvation through Jesus Christ is preached (1 Cor. 15:3-5), where the Bible is the standard for faith and practice, and where an opportunity to serve in Jesus’ name is provided. It’s important that the message proclaims the true gospel and the historical message of Jesus—not a “different gospel” (Gal. 1:6-9). It’s not the messenger that’s most important; it’s the message.

Chris Couch was only 16 years old when he first qualified to play golf at its highest level on the PGA Tour. He was quickly declared the next golfing prodigy and a surefire success for years to come.

Life, however, turned out to be more of a grind. Chris did not enjoy a sprint to success but endured a marathon that would take 16 years and 3 different stints on “mini-tours.” Tempted to quit, Couch persevered and finally, at age 32, became a Tour winner for the first time when he captured the New Orleans Open in a thrilling finish. His persistence had paid off, but it had not been easy.

In his book A Long Obedience in the Same Direction, Bible teacher Eugene Peterson reminds us that the Christian life has much more in common with a marathon than with a 100-meter dash. Peterson says we are called to persevere in “the long run, something that makes life worth living.”

With the grace and strength of Christ, we too can “run with endurance” this race of life (Heb. 12:1). And, with our Lord’s example to help and encourage us, we can, like the apostle Paul, run to win the prize of “an imperishable crown” (1 Cor. 9:25).

Slidell painting draws ACLU legal fight

The ACLU says a Louisiana courthouse lobby portrait which includes an image of Jesus is a violation of the supposed separation of church and state, but city and regional government leaders disagree. That's the crux of the lawsuit filed by the civil liberties group, which will be opposed by a Bible-based First Amendment law firm on the defendants' behalf.

The portrait hanging in the lobby of Slidell City Court depicts an image of Jesus presenting the New Testament. Below the picture is a message that reads: "To Know Peace, Obey These Laws." According to Associated Press, an unidentified person complained to the American Civil Liberties Union about the portrait -- resulting in a lawsuit against the city of Slidell, St. Tammany Parish, and City Judge James Lamz.

Settlement allows NJ high school students to acknowledge Day of Truth

Attorneys with the Alliance Defense Fund have agreed to dismiss a suit they filed on behalf of a New Jersey high school student who was told he and his Christian club could not promote the annual "Day of Truth." The dismissal came after school officials agreed to create a new student speech policy.

Ministry spearheads campaign to provide Bibles for U.S. troops overseas

The president of Revival Fires Ministries is encouraging Christians to mark the nation's birthday by sending Bibles to troops fighting the war on terror.

For several years now, evangelist Tim Todd has spearheaded a campaign to get Bibles to U.S. troops. So far, Revival Fires Ministries has provided more than 140,000 Bibles for troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. Todd says all Christians can help in the effort.

"Whether people agree with the war or not, that's not the issue," Todd said. "We all agree that all of our soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan should have Bibles."

Former songwriter sees God's hand in plans

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (BP)--Adam Dorsey has packed so much living into the past decade it might make for a good country/western song on par with "Walkin' the Floor Over You."

As any fan worth his salt knows, an authentic country verse contains at least three elements: a major heartache book-ended by loving and leaving. Dorsey, a master of divinity student at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, has experienced all three over the 10 years.

But Dorsey, himself an accomplished writer of country tunes, is quick to point out that his storyline differs from the typical country lyric in that God has been the chief actor who has orchestrated the verses of his life's song both for Dorsey's good and God's glory. Thus, in Dorsey's narrative, heartache is a minor note.

Little People Of America Expo

I just talked with Evangelist Bobby Brindle and received a great report about the Little People of America (LPA) annual convention in Seattle, Washington this week. Bobby conducted devotions during the week and had a booth at the conference expo. The expo began on Monday morning and by noon he and his volunteers had distributed 75 percent of their literature. He said they literally distributed hundreds of CD's, DVD's and Gospel tracts. The expo ended on Wednesday and he will be returning home to Georgia tomorrow.

Bobby told me, "Everything has been tremendous."

I considered attending the convention this year in Seattle and was even asked to assist with some of the devotions, but after much prayer, I never received assurance that I was supposed to be there. After hearing Bobby's report, I believe God intended for him (Bobby) to be His representative this year. We must be sensitive to how the Lord is leading us in our decisions. This was one time I was supposed to stay home. Isn't it wonderful how God always knows what's best for us and His work. I praise the Lord for Him using Bobby Brindle to plant so many seeds during this week's convention. I hope you will join me in praying for Bobby's ministry.

I hope to have some pictures from the expo to share with you by Monday. The photo, with this post, of me and Bobby was taken by Jon M. Fletcher during the LPA convention in Orlando, Florida in 2005. No More Mowing

One thing is needed, and Mary has chosen that good part. —Luke 10:42

The mayor of a small town in Kentucky stopped mowing his lawn in 2005. He has put up a sign on his property that reads: “There are more important things in life than tall grass.”

He said that he has several reasons for not cutting the grass, one of which is his wife’s death from cancer. That loss caused him to reflect on the priorities of life. He enjoys just sitting in the evenings and observing the wild flowers, squirrels, and birds that are now coming to his yard. A member of the city council remarked, “If he likes it like that, it’s fine. I kind of feel like maybe he is right. Maybe there are more important things than mowing grass.”

The mayor gives us some food for thought about priorities. What we do with our time shows what we feel is important. In our Bible reading for today, Martha was “distracted with much serving” (Luke 10:40). Mary, however, took the time to sit “at Jesus’ feet” and listen to His teaching (v.39). Perhaps she realized that she wouldn’t have many more opportunities to learn from Jesus.

Sometimes responsibilities like washing dishes, mowing the lawn, or working extra hours on a project need to wait so that we can spend time with the Lord or family or friends. That may be what’s more important. —Anne Cetas

Christian Books Still Dominate All-Time Best-Sellers Lists

Despite popular belief, the Bible is not the most printed or translated book in the English language, reminded a library special collections expert.

Though the statement very likely will puzzle many people, Richard Clement – head of the Department of Special Collections at the University of Kansas – explained that the Bible was not originally written in English.

Instead, he pointed to the Christian allegory Pilgrim’s Progress by John Bunyan, first published in 1678, as the title holder of both the most printed and most translated English book, according to ABC News on Monday.

Pilgrim’s Progresswas first translated into Dutch but has since been translated into more than 100 languages.

The book was written by John Bunyan who spent most of his life in jail because he refused to deny his faith and pledge allegiance to the Church of England. He wrote Pilgrim’s Progress while in jail.

Having had the opportunity to travel around the world, let me say that I think America is the greatest country on Earth!

We are far from perfect. We have our many flaws. But we have so much to be thankful for as a nation.

Imagine what kind of world we would live in today if there had been no America. No one to turn back the rise of Nazis and their allies in World War II. No one to stand up against the tyranny of Communism over the years. No one to stand up for the small nations that cannot help themselves. Then there are the billions of dollars in aid we have sent around the world to help those in need.

Why has America been able to do all those things? Because we have a foundation that has taught us what right and wrong are, taught us there is a God who has given us His Word to guide us and taught us there is a responsibility that comes with His bounty.

We learn those things from the book our country was founded on: the Bible.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (BP)--What does a government ordained by God look like? For the Apostle Paul writing to the Romans, it was the Roman Empire -- not what you would call an enlightened regime. You and I wouldn't like it even if we had been Roman citizens. Yet Paul referred to these pagan rulers as governing authorities established by God, and he instructed persecuted Christians to submit to them "for conscience sake":

"Everyone must submit to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except from God, and those that exist are instituted by God. So then, the one who resists the authority is opposing God's command, and those who oppose it will bring judgment on themselves" (Romans 13:1-2 HCSB).

Mohler tackles Mormonism in online debate

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (BP)--Mormonism is not Christianity, R. Albert Mohler Jr. argues in an online debate with a prominent Mormon author.

Mohler, president of Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, made his first in what will be a series of posts on Beliefnet, which is sponsoring the "blog dialogue" on Mormonism. Arguing that Mormonism is a Christian religion is Orson Scott Card, an author, screenplay writer and committed layman in the Church of Latter-day Saints of Jesus Christ.

The debate between Mohler and Card, which began June 28, will continue into the near future on Beliefnet, with both writers posting periodically in a point-counterpoint format.

In his first post, Mohler makes it clear that Mormonism cannot be considered orthodox Christianity because the religion itself begins with a rejection of historic Christianity.

The long-term goal is to encourage them to find a local church where they can feel at home.

The law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death. —Romans 8:2

After being kidnapped, held hostage for 13 days, and released, New Zealand news cameraman Olaf Wiig, with a broad smile on his face, announced, “I feel more alive now than I have in my entire life.”

For reasons difficult to understand, being freed is more exhilarating than being free.

For those who enjoy freedom every day, Olaf’s joy was a good reminder of how easily we forget how blessed we are. This is also true spiritually. Those of us who have been Christians for a long time often forget what it’s like to be held hostage by sin. We can become complacent and even ungrateful. But then God sends a reminder in the form of a new believer who gives an exuberant testimony of what God has done in his or her life, and once again we see the joy that is ours when we are “free from the law of sin and death” (Rom. 8:2).

If freedom has become boring to you, or if you tend to focus on what you can’t do, consider this: Not only are you no longer a slave to sin, but you are freed to be holy and to enjoy eternal life with Christ Jesus! (6:22).

Assaulted Indian Pastor: 'I will never quit'

Two months after being brutally assaulted by Hindu fundamentalists in the presence of television crews, Pastor Walter Masih says he is determined to continue his ministry.

Although he still needs a walking stick to move around, this did not deter the pastor from travelling more than 300 kilometres from Jaipur, the capital of Rajasthan state, to New Delhi, where he took part in a rally on 29 May to protest about a spate of attacks on Christians in recent months. Masih also attended a national convention in Bangalore in late June of Christians who say they have been persecuted.

"I am not scared. I will continue the work I have been doing for the last 17 years," 47-year-old Pentecostal pastor Masih told Ecumenical News International.

Evolutionists, Creationists Reminded of Darwin's Support for Christian Missions

The man most often pinpointed as the root of the clashes between atheist evolutionists and Christian creationists was actually a life-long defender of Christian missionary works, reminded the author of a recent report.

Charles Darwin, best known as the father of the evolution theory, was not anti-religion as many nowadays believe, but rather he had planned to be an Anglican priest and was moved by missionary efforts to reach uncivilized people.

British girl banned from wearing chastity ring

LONDON - A teenage girl banned from wearing a chastity ring in class has taken her case to Britain's High Court, arguing that her school had violated her religious freedom.

Lydia Playfoot, 16, a pupil at the Millais School in Horsham, about 40 miles south of London, wears a ring as a sign of her commitment to abstinence from sex until marriage. The school said the ring fell outside its uniform policy, which makes exceptions for Muslims wearing head scarves and Sikhs wearing steel bracelets.

Stop Needling My Camel

First Trip To Mayday

I made my first trip to Mayday, Georgia yesterday. I preached the morning and evening worship service at Macedonia Baptist Church for vacationing pastor Milton Smith. Macedonia Baptist was established over 150 years ago, so it is one of the oldest churches in the state of Georgia. I found some interesting history about the church online.

During the evening service we were joined by the pastor, associate pastor and some members of Naylor Baptist Church in Naylor, Georgia. Naylor Baptist coordinates a special ministry in October of each year. The event is called Naylor Gospel Explosion.
