The New Number One Objection To Christianity

Posted on Pray4SBC By Bryant Wright, President of the Southern Baptist Convention.

“He who is of God hears the words of God…” John 8:47

In the last twenty years, a new number one objection to Christianity has emerged: “Why do Christians think you have the only way to God and heaven?” In our pluralistic world, this is hard to take. In a world of “tolerance,” this seems intolerable.

But here’s the problem: Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth, the life. No one comes to the Father but through me.” Was Jesus really that narrow-minded and egocentric? A natural question, but the wrong question.

The key question is this: “Was He telling the truth?” If He wasn’t, we certainly don’t want to believe in Him. But, if He was, many have a problem with that. For if we feel there are many ways to heaven, we’re calling Jesus a liar, and wrong. Our problem is really with Jesus, more than with Christians who believe Him.

So what do you believe? Do you believe Jesus tells the truth? That’s the decision we must deal with if we are open and honest.

1000 Friends on Facebook

My personal Facebook profile hit a record mark this morning.  I added my 1,000th friend on Facebook.  The 1,000th friend is Jason Lowkewicz.  He attended revival services that I preached at Rock Sink Baptist Church in Old Town, Florida.

I also have a Facebook page for my ministry, James Croft Evangelistic Association.  As of the writing of this post it has received 661 "likes".

My Twitter account, on the other hand, is growing at a much slower rate.  As of this post it only has 84 followers.

I believe in using the internet in various ways to share the Gospel, promote our ministry events, and just to keep in touch with folks.  Check out some of our additional online resources at the links below.

May 15th is Internet Evangelism Day

The amazing growth of digital media is transforming the world and changing the way we communicate and even think. There are growing opportunities for digital evangelism.

Internet Evangelism Day offers a one-stop online resource guide to help Christians understand these varied opportunities. Topics covered include: how to build a church website that is 'outsider friendly', using Facebook and Twitter in evangelism, and keeping a small portfolio of video clips on your mobile phone.

For many of these opportunities, you need no technical knowledge at all. And there are many opportunities to volunteer to be an email mentor to inquirers who have visited outreach sites operated by several online ministries.

Internet Evangelism Day is an initiative of the Internet Evangelism Coalition, based at the Billy Graham Center, Wheaton. It is supported by a wide range of Christian leaders and groups.

May is Digital Outreach Month

"You have an incredible gift at your fingertips - literally. Your keyboard," says the team at Internet Evangelism Day. They claim there is growing potential to share the good news online in a variety of ways. Christians can investigate these options during May, which has been designated Digital Outreach Month. At its center is the worldwide annual focus Sunday, Internet Evangelism Day itself, on May 15.

"You do not need to be technical," says Tony Whittaker, IE Day coordinator. "There are many simple yet fulfilling ways of being salt and light in cyberspace."

On May 15, IE Day is partnering with several major publishers to offer free e-book downloads of Christian titles which are normally pay-for. These cover web evangelism, social networking and other areas of effective communication.

"This is a great opportunity to explore digital evangelism. I encourage Christians everywhere to take advantage of these free downloads to learn how to effectively share their faith in the digital world," says Naomi Frizzell, Chief Communications Officer of The Lausanne Movement.

IE Day encourages churches and other groups to focus on digital evangelism during May, at any level they choose. As a minimum, IE Day can be featured in a church bulletin, so that members can investigate its resource website. Alternatively, focus spots can be created during meetings using IE Day's free downloadable video clips or PowerPoint, or even perform a drama sketch that relates to online evangelism. Two new video-clip resource sites could be showcased live by projection, to demonstrate how to add an evangelistic video to Facebook with one click. These videos can also be downloaded to a mobile phone to share face-to-face.

IE Day's site includes pages on using mobile phones for evangelism, creating 'outsider-friendly' church websites and introductory videos, social networking, how to blog or build a website, and much else. Explore www.IEDay.net to learn more.

NOTE: As technology advances, the James Croft Evangelistic Association believes Christians must keep up with it, using the tools God gives us to spread His Word so that all may know Him.  Visit our ministry website for the various ways we use internet technologies.

Follow

Throughout the course of his public ministry, Jesus knew both the adoration and desertion of the crowds. Today, just as 2,000 years ago, the gospel asks a question that demands an answer: Will we follow? This video by Igniter Media illustrates this truth through the dynamic lens of a 21st-century social network.

Mobile phones and other devices

The potential for evangelism

girls using mobile phone
The desire to be in touch with people and information 24/7 has led to the huge growth in mobile cell phones and other mobile devices.  Over 90% of the world’s population now lives within a mobile reception area. There are about 4 billion mobile phone users (equivalent to more than half the world’s population) and many of these are in the non-western Majority World, often in 10/40 Window countries. There are more mobile phones used in Africa than USA. The mobile systems in Japan and Korea are more advanced than almost anywhere. It is a hugely significant medium. Unlike a computer, a mobile is always with you – an integrated part of you and your lifestyle.
Mobile devices are transforming communication and development in the non-Westerm world (see links and video clips in Section 9 below) and also have great potential for evangelism and discipleship.

Life After The Election

Here are a few thoughts for the morning after an election:

If you are a Christian, whether your candidate won or lost, the responsibility to pray for our leaders is still to be honored.

1 Timothy 2:1-4 (NKJV)
1 Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men,
2 for kings and all who are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence.
3 For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior,
4 who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.

Our Christian responsibility to our government is still to be honored.

Matt 22:15-22 (NKJV)
15 Then the Pharisees went and plotted how they might entangle Him in His talk.
16 And they sent to Him their disciples with the Herodians, saying, “Teacher, we know that You are true, and teach the way of God in truth; nor do You care about anyone, for You do not regard the person of men.
17 Tell us, therefore, what do You think? Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar, or not?”
18 But Jesus perceived their wickedness, and said, “Why do you test Me, you hypocrites?
19 Show Me the tax money.” So they brought Him a denarius.
20 And He said to them, “Whose image and inscription is this?”
21 They said to Him, “Caesar’s.” And He said to them, “Render therefore to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.”
22 When they had heard these words, they marveled, and left Him and went their way.

The Word of God has not changed (contrary to what some may say).

2 Tim 3:16-17 (NKJV)
16 All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness,
17 that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.

God's desire for the lost to be saved has not changed.

John 3:16 (NKJV)
16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.

2 Pet 3:9 (NKJV)
9 The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.

Our Christian responsibility to be a witness for Jesus Christ has not changed.

Matt 28:18-20 (NKJV)
18 And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth.
19 Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,
20 teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.

God's ability to save sinners has not changed.

Isa 59:1 (NKJV)
1 Behold, the Lord’s hand is not shortened, That it cannot save; Nor His ear heavy, That it cannot hear.

Rom 10:13 (NKJV)
13 For “whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

The Way to salvation has not changed, He is still the ONLY WAY (contrary to what others may say).

John 14:6 (NKJV)
6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.

God's desire to bless our nation has not changed.

2 Chr 7:14 (NKJV)
14 if My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land.

Leaders may change, but our Lord Jesus Christ never changes.

Heb 13:8 (NKJV)
8 Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.
