Hadrian’s Wall

LISTEN TO ODB RADIO: Real | MP3 | WMA
READ: Ephesians 2:11-18

[Christ] has broken down the middle wall of separation. —Ephesians 2:14

When Julius Caesar invaded the south coast of Britain in 55 BC, he met resistance from warring Celtic tribes. But a century later, Roman control had extended all the way north into what is now Scotland.

The conquest took 30,000 Celtic lives, but the Roman victory was short-lived. Surviving clansmen soon began a fierce guerrilla campaign against their occupiers. So in AD 122, Emperor Hadrian ordered a wall constructed to separate the Romans from the barbarians to the north. Hadrian’s Wall stands to this day.

In Jesus’ day, a barrier stronger than Hadrian’s Wall stood between God’s people and the Gentiles who were outside their spiritual community. It was the barrier of ethnic prejudice. God’s design was to bless all the families of the earth through Abraham (Gen. 12:1-3; Isa. 51:2). But instead of being a witness to the nations, Israel nurtured prejudice against the Gentiles.

Prejudice and racism remain with us today, even in the church. Such attitudes do damage to our witness of Christ’s love for all people. Jesus laid down His life to redeem people from every tribe and nation. We must not only accept them, we must love them as our brothers and sisters in Christ (Gal. 3:28-29; Rev. 5:9). Dennis Fisher

Full-time Ministry

I preached my last regularly scheduled Wednesday night service at First Baptist Church of Lake Butler, Florida last night. We had almost a full house and it was a wonderful time of special music, worship and fellowship. Pictured are Kevin Owen and Cheryl Kent. They provided special music for the service, and the other photo is "yours truly". Our new pastor, Jason Johns, will take over this Sunday, October 1st and he was also present for last night's service. During the message I made an announcement concerning the direction of this ministry.

After almost two years of prayerful consideration, I am answering God's call to full-time evangelism. I have submitted my letter of resignation to New River Solid Waste Association and my last day of work as Assistant Director of Public Relations and Education will be Saturday, October 14, 2006.

This is a big move for a 48 year old man and I must admit that I am excited and a little anxious too. I will certainly be totally dependent on the Lord for everything. I will have more detailed info about this decision on the October 2006 episode of Walking with the Giant, which is due out next week.

I would like to ask you to please be in prayer for me and this ministry. Please pray that the Lord opens the doors of opportunity as He sees fit, and keep my health in your prayers too. I also ask that you share these requests for prayer with others.

Southern Joy

On Saturday, I had the pleasure of interviewing Junior Combs and Southern Joy, a Southern Gospel Music trio. This group took first place in the group talent competition, September 16th, during the 2006 National Quartet Convention in Louisville, Kentucky. The interview along with a couple of the group's songs will be featured on the October 2006 episode of Walking with the Giant. The program will be available online the first week of October.

Finding The Flow

He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water. —John 7:38

While using a computer to edit a video presentation, a colleague and I were greeted one morning by the on-screen error message: UNABLE TO FIND THE FLOW. Whatever the software program meant by those words, it brought to mind the popular saying, “Go with the flow.” To some people that means behaving as most other people do without trying to swim against the current of the culture. To others it speaks of being more accepting of circumstances without trying to control everything that happens.

But for followers of the Lord, there’s another dimension of going with the flow. Jesus said: “If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink. He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water” (John 7:37-38). Christ spoke of the Holy Spirit, who would make His home in every believer. In a very real sense, when we invite Christ into our lives, the Flow finds us and we find the Flow. From then on, we are recipients and conduits of living water—the eternal source of thirst-quenching satisfaction for our souls. The indwelling Holy Spirit carries us along by a power and purpose greater than ourselves.

As channels of God’s living water, we are free to go with His flow. David C. McCasland

Father, thank You for Your Spirit,
Fill us with His love and power;
Change us into Christ’s own image
Day by day and hour by hour. —Anon.

What Jesus accomplished for us, the Holy Spirit works out in us.

Immortality Breakthrough

Our Daily Bread

LISTEN TO ODB RADIO: Real | MP3 | WMA
READ: Psalm 90

I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also. —John 14:3

Ray Kurzweil is a remarkable scientist and inventor. In a book he coauthored, titled Fantastic Voyage: Live Long Enough To Live Forever, he contends that science and technology hold the key to immortality. Kurzweil lives on a strict diet enhanced with a regimen of supplements, fully convinced that he will be alive when the immortality breakthrough happens. He is not a crackpot but a respected member of the business community.

In contrast to this optimism about what science can do stands the realism of Moses. “The days of our lives are seventy years; and if by reason of strength they are eighty years, yet their boast is only labor and sorrow” (Ps. 90:10). At best we live a few decades, and then we are gone like grass in the park.

Far better to trust ourselves to Jesus, who promises to join us to the timeless life of God. He told His disciples, “If I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also” (John 14:3).

Christ’s followers live in the assurance that when the sun has burned its last and the stars have tumbled from the sky, we shall be alive. We anticipate a life greater than anything we could imagine in our wildest dreams. Haddon W. Robinson

Don't Talk To The Parrot

Alice's dishwasher quit working so she called a repairman. Since she had to go to work the next day, she told the repairman, "I'll leave the key under the mat. Fix the dishwasher, leave the bill on the counter, and I'll mail you a check."

"Oh, by the way don't worry about my bulldog Spike. He won't bother you. But, whatever you do, do NOT, under ANY circumstances, talk to my parrot! I REPEAT, DO NOT TALK TO MY PARROT!!!"

When the repairman arrived at Alice's apartment the following day, he discovered the biggest, meanest looking bulldog he has ever seen. But, just as she had said, the dog just lay there on the carpet watching the repairman go about his work.

The parrot, however, drove him nuts the whole time with his incessant yelling, cursing and name calling. Finally the repairman couldn't contain himself any longer and yelled, "Shut up, you stupid, ugly bird!"

To which the parrot replied, "Get him, Spike!"

Pothole Baptism

After a hardy rainstorm filled all the potholes in the streets and alleys, a young mother watched her two little boys playing in a puddle through her kitchen window. The older of the two, a five year old lad, grabbed his sibling by the back of his head and shoved his face into the water hole. As the boy recovered and stood laughing and dripping, the mother runs to the yard in a panic.

"Why on earth did you do that to your little brother?!" she says as she shook the older boy in anger.

"We were just playing 'church' mommy," he said. "And I was just baptizing him in the name of the Father, the Son and in the hole-he-goes."

Common Ground

Our Daily Bread

That I might win those who are without law. —1 Corinthians 9:21

Roman emperors are not generally remembered for their wisdom, but there are a few exceptions. One great thinker was Marcus Aurelius, emperor of Rome from AD 161 to 180. Gifted with a brilliant mind, he was one of the great intellectual rulers in Western civilization.

Although he never became a convert to the new faith that would be called Christianity, he displayed remarkable insight. His wisdom reflects the law of God written in the heart of someone who did not have God’s Word (Rom. 2:14-15). For example:

• The happiness of your life depends on the quality of your thoughts.
• You have power over your mind—not outside events.
• Your life is what your thoughts make it.

These words sound similar to Proverbs 23:7, “As [a person] thinks in his heart, so is he.” We can learn helpful principles from non-Christians and use their beliefs as common ground for sharing the gospel. When Paul stood on Mars Hill addressing some of the leading intellectuals of his day, he did not belittle their beliefs but established common ground with them and then gave the gospel (Acts 17:26-28).

Let’s look for common ground with our neighbors, so that we may lead them to Christ. Dennis Fisher

Soldier's Angels

It never ceases to amaze me how the Lord works and the things He will use to accomplish His will. Yesterday, Tuesday, was Election Day in Florida and I received an interesting telephone call that I want to tell you about.

Jan McCart called and said she had picked up one of the Walking with the Giant CD's at her polling place in Winter Springs, Florida. The voting precinct is at First Baptist Church of Winter Springs and she found one of the CD's as she walked through the building to reach the voting area. The CD's were left at the church about 6 weeks ago during a children's camp.

Mrs. McCart said she was part of an organization called Soldier's Angels. The organization seeks to have soldier's , that have been deployed around the world, "adopted" by citizens. They then write and send packages to the soldier and have even delivered messages to family members back home. She said that she was in communication with a chaplain stationed in Iraq and wanted to obtain additional copies of some of the CD's to send to him. I have enthusiastically agreed to this request.

You never know what methods God will use to spread the Gospel of His Son, Jesus Christ.

Isaiah 55:8-9 (NKJV)
8 “For My thoughts are not your thoughts,
Nor are your ways My ways,” says the LORD.
9 “For as the heavens are higher than the earth,
So are My ways higher than your ways,
And My thoughts than your thoughts.

After The Election

Yesterday was "election day" in Florida, so I thought this would provide some comical relief for both winners and losers.

While walking down the street one day a US senator is tragically hit by a truck and dies. His soul arrives in heaven and is met by St. Peter at the entrance.

"Welcome to heaven," says St. Peter. "Before you settle in, it seems there is a problem. We seldom see a high official around these parts, you see, so we're not sure what to do with you."

"No problem, just let me in," says the man.

"Well, I'd like to, but I have orders from higher up. What we'll do is have you spend one day in hell and one in heaven. Then you can choose where to spend eternity."

"Really, I've made up my mind. I want to be in heaven," says the senator.

"I'm sorry, but we have our rules."

And with that, St. Peter escorts him to the elevator and he goes down, down, down to hell. The doors open and he finds himself in the middle of a green golf course. In the distance is a clubhouse and standing in front of it are all his friends and other politicians who had worked with him. Everyone is very happy and in evening attire.

They run to greet him, shake his hand, and reminisce about the good times they had while getting rich at the expense of the people.

They play a friendly game of golf and then dine on lobster, caviar and champagne.

Also present is the devil, who really is a very friendly guy who has a good time dancing and telling jokes. They are having such a good time that before he realizes it, is time to go.

Everyone gives him a hearty farewell and waves while the elevator rises...

The elevator goes up, up, up and the door reopens on heaven where St. Peter is waiting for him.

"Now it's time to visit heaven."

So, 24 hours pass with the senator joining a group of contented souls moving from cloud to cloud, playing the harp and singing. They have a good time and, before he realizes it, the 24 hours have gone by and St. Peter returns.

"Well, then, you've spent a day in hell and another in heaven. Now choose your eternity."

The senator reflects for a minute, then he answers: "Well, I would never have said it before, I mean heaven has been delightful, but I think I would be better off in hell."

So St. Peter escorts him to the elevator and he goes down, down, down to hell.

Now the doors of the elevator open and he's in the middle of a barren land covered with waste and garbage. He sees all his friends, dressed in rags, picking up the trash and putting it in black bags as more trash falls from above.

The devil comes over to him and puts his arm around his shoulder.

"I don't understand," stammers the senator. "Yesterday I was here and there was a golf course and clubhouse, and we ate lobster and caviar, drank champagne, and danced and had a great time. Now there's just a wasteland full of garbage and my friends look miserable. What happened?"

The devil looks at him, smiles and says, "Yesterday we were campaigning...... Today you voted."

Revelation 12:7-9 (NKJV)
7 And war broke out in heaven: Michael and his angels fought with the dragon; and the dragon and his angels fought,
8 but they did not prevail, nor was a place found for them in heaven any longer.
9 So the great dragon was cast out, that serpent of old, called the Devil and Satan, who deceives the whole world; he was cast to the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.

Revelation 20:10 (NKJV)
The devil, who deceived them, was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone where the beast and the false prophet are. And they will be tormented day and night forever and ever.

Lunch Blessing

Sunday morning I preached a couple of services at Elim Baptist Church in Fort White, Florida. After the services I went to the Texas Roadhouse in Lake City, Florida for lunch. After completing my meal I was informed by the waiter that my bill had already been paid by someone. The waiter said the man had not only paid the bill, but also included a tip. I have no idea who this mystery donor is, but I have asked the Lord to bless him for blessing me.

After lunch I went to Wal-mart where an elderly gentleman, seated on a motorized scooter, outside the door, gave me a friendly "hello". I didn't know him, but I shook his hand and returned the greeting. He asked me if he could get a dollar from me for something to eat. I thought, a dollar would not go far, but I reached for my wallet to see what I had. Wouldn't you know it, I only had two bills, a $20 and $50 (I don't normally carry that much cash). I must admit I hesitated for a moment and then a thought raced through my mind, "someone just bought your lunch..." I then handed the man the $20 bill and as he thanked me I turned to walk away. He then noticed how much I had given him and began to shout "God bless you! God bless you!"

Some people might read this true story and say, "There are no free lunches". I prefer to think that God sent someone to bless me by paying my bill and then expected me to return the blessing to someone else by paying a bill for them. I guess that's not too much to ask, after all, Jesus paid the price for my sins on the cross. He also paid the price for you too.

1 Corinthians 6:20 (NKJV)
For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s.

Gossip

Mildred, the church gossiper and self-appointed monitor of the church's morals, kept sticking her nose into other people's business.

Several members did not approve of her extra curricular activities, but feared her enough to maintain their silence.

She made a mistake, however, when she accused Henry, a new member, of being an alcoholic after she saw his old pickup parked in front of the town's only bar one afternoon.

She emphatically told Henry and several others that everyone seeing it there would know what he was doing.

Henry, a man of few words, stared at her for a moment and just turned and walked away. He didn't explain, defend, or deny. He said nothing.

Later that evening, Henry quietly parked his pickup in front of Mildred's house...walked home....and left it there all night.

You gotta love Henry!

James 3:5-10 (NKJV)
5Even so the tongue is a little member and boasts great things.
See how great a forest a little fire kindles!
6And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity. The tongue is so set among our members that it defiles the whole body, and sets on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire by hell.
7For every kind of beast and bird, of reptile and creature of the sea, is tamed and has been tamed by mankind.
8But no man can tame the tongue. It is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.
9With it we bless our God and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in the similitude of God.
10Out of the same mouth proceed blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not to be so.
