Federal appeals court rules school district discriminated against Christian club

A South Carolina public school district has been ordered to pay nearly $100,000 in damages for discriminating against a Christian "Good News Club" for students.

Administrators at the Anderson School District Five in Greenville charged Child Evangelism Fellowship (CEF), which runs Good News Clubs, a fee to use school facilities. However, the school waived fees for other groups such as the YMCA, Students Against Destructive Decisions, and other organizations.

A federal appeals court has ruled the Anderson School District's policy unconstitutional and also ruled that the South Carolina district violated the constitutional rights of its Christian students, who wanted to form an after-school club. The court ordered the school to pay $99,000 in attorney's fees and costs.
