Oldest Dolphin Born in Captivity Turns 54
Note: I just think this is a cool story. It brings back memories of my school trips to Marineland years ago.
ST. AUGUSTINE, FL (AP) -- The world's oldest bottlenose dolphin born in captivity just celebrated her 54th birthday.
Nellie squirted out a candle on top of an ice and fish birthday cake yesterday morning at Marineland's Dolphin Conservation Center in St. Augustine. Then she leaped into the air in front of a crowd of children and parents who gathered around her tank for the celebration.
Billy Hurley, the center's general manager, says Nellie is still healthy. Her vocalization and general energy are that of a dolphin in its 20s. Nellie has appeared in a Timex commercial and a Benji movie. She's also the official mascot for Jacksonville University.
