School District Sued For Holding Graduation Ceremony In Church

TRENTON, N.J. -- The New Jersey chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union is suing Newark public schools for holding a high school graduation ceremony in a Baptist church.

The lawsuit alleges that the district violated the rights of a Muslim senior who couldn't attend his own graduation because his beliefs don't allow him to enter a building with religious images.

A constitutional law expert, Harvard Professor Charles Fried, says public institutions sometimes need to rent space at religious institutions, such as when polling places are set up in church basements. At such times, he says it helps if the religious symbols are covered up.
